Re:Cognition Health, described as the UK's largest independent provider of Alzheimer's disease-modifying treatments, has opened a clinic at Tallaght Cross East in Dublin. According to the company, it is the first dedicated independent memory centre in Ireland to offer access to Alzheimer's disease-targeting therapies, specifically Leqembi (lecanemab) and Kisunla (donanemab), for patients who meet the eligibility criteria for early-stage disease.
The distinction between these drugs and older dementia medications matters. Conventional treatments ease symptoms without altering the underlying disease. Lecanemab and donanemab are anti-amyloid monoclonal antibodies designed to clear the toxic amyloid protein that accumulates in the brains of people with Alzheimer's. Clinical trials have shown they can slow progression in people accurately diagnosed during the early stages of the illness - which puts a premium on timely, specialist assessment and diagnostic investigation, not just access to the drug itself.
The opening follows regulatory approval of both medicines in Ireland. Until now, Irish patients pursuing these therapies were travelling to Re:Cognition Health's UK clinics for assessment, diagnostics and ongoing treatment, a considerable burden for families given that anti-amyloid treatment involves repeated infusions and monitoring rather than a single visit.
Re:Cognition Health says it has seen substantial demand from patients and families across Ireland, which the company reads as evidence of both unmet need for specialist memory services and a clear preference for care closer to home. How many Irish patients will ultimately qualify remains the open question: eligibility for these therapies is narrow, and it depends on confirming amyloid pathology early enough in the disease course for treatment to be appropriate.
